Windrush: 75 Years of Modern Britain
Windrush: 75 Years of Modern Britain
In June 1948, the troop ship Windrush docked at Tilbury in Essex. On board were 800 West Indian immigrants, many of them responding to the call of the ‘mother country’ for workers. Mike and Trevor Phillips have used first-person accounts of those on the boat - as well as those of their descendants, friends, neighbours and politicians - to tell the story of black British life in the twentieth century. This updated edition coincides with the 75th anniversary of the ship’s voyage and includes reflections on its legacy in 2023.
