Collection: Harewood's Chinese Wallpaper
The Chinese Wallpaper at Harewood was originally commissioned for Edwin Lascelles, 1st Baron of Harewood and hung by Chippendale's men in 1769 for the Chintz bedroom. However, generations following Edwin Lascelles did not share the same interest for oriental items and luxuries. During the 19th Century the wallpaper was removed from the walls, rolled up and stored in an outbuilding. The wallpaper was discovered in 1988 and following a careful restoration process it is now hung in the East Bedroom. The restoration process revealed the vibrant colours and continuous landscape of traditional Chinese rural working life.
